FIlm Still BBC Scotland Disability Promo

Documentary

I have predominantly worked within the commercial and drama sector, having studied fiction filmmaking, however I was interested in branching out to explore documentary, being a completely different skillset.

I was lucky enough to have a BBC Scotland promotional video as my first attempt, teaching me many basic fundamental skills I could then build on.

I enjoy documentary equally to drama as it provides it's own set of unique challenges per project which I would like to explore.

As with fiction, it is about the story being told and the best way to convey the emotion and connect to an audience.

I would be interested in working on more documentaries, particularly 'fly-on'the-wall' styles as I have yet to do so.

BBC Disability Promo

BBC Scotland comissioned a promo to be screened to advertise their equal opportunity regulations to potential new recruits who may be reluctant to apply due to their disability.

I shot the promo which followed the journey of two of their, then, current employees who have a physical disability.

Director Claire McGuire expressed a desire to highlight the abilities she has that people may not expect of her through interviews and 'day in the life' footage.

As a documentary I had to work with the available light controlling it in-camera as well as adopt a handheld style in order to follow the subjects through their daily life.

Knox: The Life and Legacy of Scotland's Controversial Reformer

'Knox' is a feature documentary that was crowd funded for Trinity Productions.
During production we shot with a limited crew throughout the UK in locations such as Newcastle and Blanchland as well as Geneva and Frankfurt.

Being a mainly presenter led documentary allowed me time to light and setup for sequences, however with multiple unit moves and historical locations I was limited in time and equipment.

I came from a predominantely drama and commercial background and so appreciated the opportunity to branch out and learn how documentary differs during principal photography.

It gave me the opportunity to work abroad and shoot both a fully fledged documentary and feature film which taught me a lot of new skills and opened up the world of documentary to me for potential future projects.

We shot on the Black Magic Pocket Cinema camera.
